Empathy: Philosophical and Psychological Perspectives (Hardcover)

Empathy: Philosophical and Psychological Perspectives
Empathy: Philosophical and Psychological Perspectives (Hardcover)
By Amy Coplan

Review & Description

Empathy has for a long time, at least since the eighteenth century, been seen as centrally important in relation to our capacity to gain a grasp of the content of other people's minds, and predict and explain what they will think, feel, and do; and in relation to our capacity to respond to others ethically. In addition, empathy is seen as having a central role in aesthetics, in the understanding of our engagement with works of art and with fictional characters. A fuller understanding of empathy is now offered by the interaction of research in science and the humanities. Empathy: Philosophical and Psychological Perspectives draws together nineteen original chapters by leading researchers across several disciplines, together with an extensive Introduction by the editors. The individual chapters reveal how important it is, in a wide range of fields of enquiry, to bring to bear an understanding of the role of empathy in its various guises. This volume offers the ideal starting-point for the exploration of this intriguing aspect of human life. Read more

Media Life (Hardcover)

Media Life
Media Life (Hardcover)
By Mark Deuze

Review & Description

Research consistently shows how through the years more of our time gets spent using media, how multitasking our media has become a regular feature of everyday life, and that consuming media for most people increasingly takes place alongside producing media. "Media Life" is a primer on how we may think of our lives as lived in rather than with media. This book uses the way media function today as a prism to understand key issues in contemporary society, where reality is open source, identities are - like websites - always under construction, and where private life is lived in public forever more. Ultimately, media are to us as water is to fish. The question is: how can we live a good life in media like fish in water? "Media Life" offers a compass for the way ahead. Read more

Review & Description

So often in many people’s lives, there is an awakening. For some it comes out of nowhere, and for others it seems as though it has always been. Seemingly from darkness, a light turns on, and all that was once confusing becomes clear, and all that was once hidden is revealed. Some call this enlightenment. Some call this a revelation. Some call this peace. I call it an awareness of the heart.

The following passages were written between late 2002 until 2010. Inspired by those around me, including loved ones, family, friends and strangers, and by the happenings of the world we share, my heart was poured onto paper. Though these words were written by my hand and sometimes spoken by my tongue, there is nothing unique about them, for the stirring in me is also in you.

So whether you choose to read the following passages in order, read it backwards, or randomly allow yourself to pick a page, don’t follow me. Instead, take a journey into your own heart and see where it takes you.

Throughout these pages, you will find references to God, Allah, Great Spirit, The Divine, Elohim, Yahweh, Jehova, He who has no name, and a myriad of other beliefs. Though our words and our thoughts may differ, today, allow yourself to read with an open mind, an open heart and an open spirit. Let your heart inspire you. Let God work through you by being you.So often in many people’s lives, there is an awakening. For some it comes out of nowhere, and for others it seems as though it has always been. Circles is an essay by Ralph Waldo Emerson, first published in 1841. The essay consists of a philosophical view of the vast array of circles one may find throughout nature. In the opening line of the essay Emerson states "The eye is the first circle; the horizon which it forms is the second; and throughout nature this primary figure is repeated without end".

----

Ralph Waldo Emerson (May 25, 1803 – April 27, 1882) was an American essayist, lecturer, and poet, who led the Transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century. ----

Quotes by Ralph Waldo Emerson:

"Whoso would be a man, must be a nonconformist. He who would gather immortal palms must not be hindered by the name of goodness. Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind. Absolve you to yourself and you shall have the sufferage of the world."

Spiral Dynamics: A Challenge To Leadership (DVD)

Spiral Dynamics: A Challenge To Leadership
Spiral Dynamics: A Challenge To Leadership (DVD)
By Dr. Don Beck

Review & Description

In this two hour and forty minute interactive DVD, Dr. Don Beck speaks about the developmental system called "Spiral Dynamics". He goes into detail about each of the "levels" or "memes" along with the Four-Quadrant framework of integral philosopher Ken Wilber. He gives real-world illustrations from his work with large organizations, corporations, governments and NGOs.

"It’s not that we need to form new organizations. It's simply that we have to awaken to new ways of thinking. I believe it makes no sense to spend a lot of time attacking the current realities. It is time to create the new models that have in them the complexity that makes the older systems obsolete. And to the extent that we can do that, and do that quickly, I think we can provide what will be necessary for a major breakthrough for the future." -Dr. Don Beck

Dr. Beck lays out 6 levels or stages of evolutionary value systems called "memes", or units of cultural transmission in the "first tier". He then describes the 2 levels that research indicates are on the cultural and social horizon in the "second tier". The viewer is taken through all eight memes including examples.

This DVD can be played on either a home entertainment center or a computer. When viewed on a computer with broadband, there are live links to additional web resources -- accessible when the "LINK" button appears (and is clicked-on). Descriptive on-screen menus both explain and direct the viewer to the material. Read more

Satish Kumar Spiritual Leadership: Watering the Seeds of Compassion, Love, Friendship, Family and Relationship
Satish Kumar Spiritual Leadership: Watering the Seeds of Compassion, Love, Friendship, Family and Relationship (DVD)
By Satish Kumar

Review & Description

At the age of nine years old, Satish Kumar renounced the world and with the blessings of his mother joined the wandering brotherhood of Jain monks in rural India. Some ten years later he left his life as a monk and became a campaigner for land reform, working to turn Gandhi's vision of a renewed India and a peaceful world into reality. Later, he undertook an 8,000 mile peace pilgrimage, walking from India to Moscow, Paris, London and Washington. He wanted the leaders of the world's nuclear nations to know that in a nuclear war most of the people who would die would be non-combatants. In 1973, he became Editor of Resurgence magazine "publishing articles that are on the cutting edge of current thinking, promoting creativity, ecology, spirituality and frugality." He founded the Small School in Hartland, a pioneering secondary school that brings into its curriculum ecological and spiritual values. In 1991, he founded Schumacher College an international center for the study of ecological and spiritual values, of which he currently is the Program Director. He was a co-founder of Jain Spirit - in partnership with Vandana Shiva. Satish established Bija Viyapeeth (School of the Seed), an international college for sustainable living in India. Following Indian tradition, in his fiftieth year, he undertook another pilgrimage: he walked to the holy places of Britain - Glastonbury, Canterbury, Lindisfarne and Iona: A celebration of his love of life and nature. In 1999 his autobiography "Path Without Destination" was published. In 2000, Satish Kumar was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Education from the University of Plymouth. In 2001 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Literature from the University of Lancaster. In 2001, Satish Kumar was presented with the Jamnalal Bajaj International Award for Promoting Gandhian Values Abroad. Satish teaches, lectures and runs workshops internationally on reverential ecology, holistic education and voluntary simplicity. Read more

Review & Description

Spinoza's theoretical philosophy is one of the most radical attempts to construct a pure ontology with a single infinite substance. This book, which presents Spinoza's main ideas in dictionary form, has as its subject the opposition between ethics and morality, and the link between ethical and ontological propositions. His ethics is an ethology, rather than a moral science. Attention has been drawn to Spinoza by deep ecologists such as Arne Naess, the Norwegian philosopher; and this reading of Spinoza by Deleuze lends itself to a radical ecological ethic. As Robert Hurley says in his introduction, “Deleuze opens us to the idea that the elements of the different individuals we compose may be nonhuman within us. One wonders, finally, whether Man might be defined as a territory, a set of boundaries, a limit on existence.”

Gilles Deleuze, known for his inquiries into desire, language, politics, and power, finds a kinship between Spinoza and Nietzsche. He writes, ""Spinoza did not believe in hope or even in courage; he believed only in joy and in vision . . . he more than any other gave me the feeling of a gust of air from behind each time I read him, of a witch's broom that he makes one mount.

Gilles Deleuze was a professor of philosophy at the University of Paris at Vincennes. Robert Hurley is the translator of Michel Foucault's History of Sexuality.

Fantasia of the Unconscious (Paperback)

Fantasia of the Unconscious
Fantasia of the Unconscious (Paperback)
By D.H. Lawrence

Review & Description

The present book is a continuation from "Psychoanalysis and the Unconscious." The generality of readers had better just leave it alone. The generality of critics likewise. I really don't want to convince anybody. It is quite in opposition to my whole nature. I don't intend my books for the generality of readers. I count it a mistake of our mistaken democracy, that every man who can read print is allowed to believe that he can read all that is printed. I count it a misfortune that serious books are exposed in the public market, like slaves exposed naked for sale. But there we are, since we live in an age of mistaken democracy, we must go through with it. Read more

It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's repeating themes, the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his or her own instincts and ideas. It is the source of one of Emerson's most famous quotes, "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds".

On the Shortness of Life: Letters from a Stoic (Annotated) (Kindle Edition)

On the Shortness of Life: Letters from a Stoic (Annotated)
On the Shortness of Life: Letters from a Stoic (Annotated) (Kindle Edition)
By Lucius Annaeus Seneca

Review & Description

Letters From a Stoic: On the Shortness of Life (De Brevitate Vitae in Latin) is a moral essay written by Seneca the Younger, a Roman Stoic philosopher, to his friend Paulinus. The philosopher brings up many Stoic principles on the nature of time, namely that men waste much of it on empty pursuits. Seneca asserts that nature gives man enough time to do what is really important and the individual must allot it properly. According to Seneca, time is best used in the study of philosophy.

Letters from a Stoic: On the Shortness of Life is recommended reading by Timothy Ferriss, the bestselling author of the Four-Hour Workweek and Four-Hour Body.

This essay is annotated with biographical notes on the life of Lucius Annaeus Seneca.

This essay is often considered one of the classical essays on Stoicism and Stoic philosophy, and is often suggested reading alongside the writings of the Stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius.

This essay was translated by John W. Basore, Loeb Classical Library
London: William Heinemann, 1932.

Quotes of Lucius Annaeus Seneca:

A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a man perfected without trials.

A great fortune is a great slavery.

A large part of mankind is angry not with the sins, but with the sinners.

A man who suffers before it is necessary, suffers more than is necessary.

A person's fears are lighter when the danger is at hand.

A quarrel is quickly settled when deserted by one party; there is no battle unless there be two.

A sword never kills anybody; it is a tool in the killer's hand.

As long as you live, keep learning how to live.

He was seen as a champion of individualism and a prescient critic of the countervailing pressures of society, and he disseminated his thoughts through dozens of published essays and more than 1,500 public lectures across the United States.

"History," first published in Essays (First Series) in 1841, is widely considered to be a corollary thesis to the definitive statement of Ralph Waldo Emerson's philosophy of individualism, "Self-Reliance". The essay is a fabric woven of many threads, from a journal entry written as early as 1832 to material first delivered in lectures between 1836 and 1839. Ralph Waldo Emerson’s first series of essays grew out of the public lectures he gave after resigning as pastor of the Second Church of Boston. Though a great number of parallels exist between the essays, “Self- Reliance” and “History”, there is no intended coherence in the volume as a whole.Ralph Waldo Emerson (May 25, 1803 – April 27, 1882) was an American essayist, lecturer, and poet, who led the Transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century. Though a great number of parallels exist between the essays, “Self- Reliance” and “History”, there is no intended coherence in the volume as a whole. Read more

Review & Description

From Victorian lndia to near-future New York, The Calcutta Chromosome takes readers on a wondrous journey through time as a computer programmer trapped in a mind-numbing job hits upon a curious item that will forever change his life. When Antar discovers the battered I.D. card of a long-lost acquaintance, he is suddenly drawn into a spellbinding adventure across centuries and around the globe, into the strange life of L. Murugan, a man obsessed with the medical history of malaria, and into a magnificently complex world where conspiracy hangs in the air like mosquitoes on a summer night.

The Calcutta Chromosome is one of those books that's marketed as a mainstream thriller even though it is an excellent science fiction novel (It won the prestigious Arthur C. Clarke Award). The main character is a man named Antar, whose job is to monitor a somewhat finicky computer that sorts through mountains of information. When the computer finds something it can't catalog, it brings the item to Antar's attention. A string of these seemingly random anomalies puts Antar on the trail of a man named Murugan, who disappeared in Calcutta in 1995 while searching for the truth behind the discovery of the cure for malaria. This search for Murugan leads, in turn, to the discovery of the Calcutta Chromosome, which can shift bits of personality from one person to another. That's when things really get interesting. Review & Description

"On Becoming-Music: Between Boredom and Ecstasy is a critical approach to the possibility of music as an art form in the age of media. It opens our ears and our minds to the dialectics of repetition and variation, ecstasy and entertainment in music." - Michael Schmidt  "In our world of conventional music pieties to which almost everyone pays lip service, Peter Price and Tyler Burba have opened up a new world of sound aesthetics-with terrific results. This book is an exhilarating plunge into a playful world of sound at its most ethereal: it's an exploration that is an engaging and forthright manifesto into why mix culture means so much more in the 21st century than anything in the rear view mirror." - Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky that Subliminal Kid Sound as Art in the Age of Global Entertainment examines the changing role of music as art and entertainment in a world of global commodity circulation. From Adorno to the iPod and Jean-Luc Nancy on techno, this text is a "mashup" of music, philosophy, and political economy. The Ecstasy of Difference: The Phenomenology of Repetition and Variation in Music debunks the relation of the ecstatic experience through music to repetition. It investigates the role of form, genre, and the music market on the possibilities of ecstatic listening and how music has been used throughout history to subdue through pseudo-exaltation. Clearing our ears of these ideological aesthetics, we are left with an opening for a truly ecstatic becoming-music. About the authors: Peter Price is a composer, digital artist, and media theorist. He co-directs "thefidget space" in Philadelphia, a research laboratory for new forms of art, performance, and media. Peter received an M.A. from the European Graduate School and is a candidate for a PhD in Media Philosophy. Tyler Burba is a musician/poet performing in the groups Snowboots, a psychedelic folk band, and Visit, an existential country band. Tyler completed his M.A. in Communication at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland, where he is currently pursuing a PhD. He lives and teaches in New York City. Read more

Review & Description

The crisis of music and the proliferation of the digital pose unique challenges to thinking about sound. In an attempt to recenter a philosophy of music within - and radiating out from - the figure of resonance, Peter Price formulates a new philosophy of the sonic, offering an incisive reading of Heidegger, Deleuze, Ronell, and Schirmacher, among many others. His approach divests itself of the traditional metaphysics with which music in the West has been so intimately intertwined to become a vibrational ontology and an aesthetics of experimental sonic practice.

Reviews: "Resonance in music and in media is both magic and fatal. In his brilliant book Peter Price follows the trace of this ambivalence with philosophical and musical inspiration." Michael Schmidt, Coordinator of Classical Music Online at Bavarian Radio and John Cage Chair at the European Graduate School

"This radical contribution to the discipline of sonic theory finds no comfort in the grand narratives of the music establishment. Equally critical of New-Age conceptions and the euphoria of remix culture apologists, Peter Price offers a contemplation in the spirit of a John Cage/Martin Heidegger assemblage that points to openings for a joyful practice of experimental arts." Christian Hänggi, media ecologist

Review & Description

On the Shortness of Life (De Brevitate Vitae in Latin) is a moral essay written by Seneca the Younger, a Roman Stoic philosopher, to his friend Paulinus. The philosopher brings up many Stoic principles on the nature of time, namely that men waste much of it on empty pursuits. Seneca asserts that nature gives man enough time to do what is really important and the individual must allot it properly. According to Seneca, time is best used in the study of philosophy.
