Review & Description

"Unique among survival books...stunning...enthralling. Deep Survival makes compelling, and chilling, reading."—Penelope Purdy, Denver Post

After her plane crashes, a seventeen-year-old girl spends eleven days walking through the Peruvian jungle. Against all odds, with no food, shelter, or equipment, she gets out. A better-equipped group of adult survivors of the same crash sits down and dies. What makes the difference?

Examining such stories of miraculous endurance and tragic death—how people get into trouble and how they get out again (or not)—Deep Survival takes us from the tops of snowy mountains and the depths of oceans to the workings of the brain that control our behavior. Through close analysis of case studies, Laurence Gonzales describes the "stages of survival" and reveals the essence of a survivor—truths that apply not only to surviving in the wild but also to surviving life-threatening illness, relationships, the death of a loved one, running a business during uncertain times, even war.

Fascinating for any reader, and absolutely essential for anyone who takes a hike in the woods, this book will change the way we understand ourselves and the great outdoors. Read more

Review & Description

America has a problem. Conservatives aren't helping their kids mature past that arrested development phase also known as liberalism! In this groundbreaking book, noted speaker Reb Bradley proves that societal pressures and foolish child-raising theories that have gone mainstream are preventing parents from developing in their kids the key ingredients of maturity, including self-control. Too many children are becoming adults who are ruled purely by magical thinking, passions, emotions and desires -- the hallmarks of the liberal mindset. It's up to parents to turn their baby Bolsheviks into good citizens by helping their kids mature past their infantile liberal stage. Reb Bradley shows how. Read more

The Screwtape Letters (The C.S. Lewis Signature Classics) (Kindle Edition)

The Screwtape Letters (The C.S. Lewis Signature Classics)
The Screwtape Letters (The C.S. Lewis Signature Classics) (Kindle Edition)
By C. S. Lewis

Review & Description

In this humorous and perceptive exchange between two devils, C. S. Lewis delves into moral questions about good vs. evil, temptation, repentance, and grace. Through this wonderful tale, the reader emerges with a better understanding of what it means to live a faithful life.

Who among us has never wondered if there might not really be a tempter sitting on our shoulders or dogging our steps? C.S. Lewis dispels all doubts. In The Screwtape Letters, one of his bestselling works, we are made privy to the instructional correspondence between a senior demon, Screwtape, and his wannabe diabolical nephew Wormwood. As mentor, Screwtape coaches Wormwood in the finer points, tempting his "patient" away from God.

Each letter is a masterpiece of reverse theology, giving the reader an inside look at the thinking and means of temptation. Tempters, according to Lewis, have two motives: the first is fear of punishment, the second a hunger to consume or dominate other beings. On the other hand, the goal of the Creator is to woo us unto himself or to transform us through his love from "tools into servants and servants into sons." It is the dichotomy between being consumed and subsumed completely into another's identity or being liberated to be utterly ourselves that Lewis explores with his razor-sharp insight and wit.

The most brilliant feature of The Screwtape Letters may be likening hell to a bureaucracy in which "everyone is perpetually concerned about his own dignity and advancement, where everyone has a grievance, and where everyone lives the deadly serious passions of envy, self-importance, and resentment." We all understand bureaucracies, be it the Department of Motor Vehicles, the IRS, or one of our own making. So we each understand the temptations that slowly lure us into hell. If you've never read Lewis, The Screwtape Letters is a great place to start. And if you know Lewis, but haven't read this, you've missed one of his core writings. --Patricia Klein Read more

The Middle Way: Finding Happiness in a World of Extremes (Hardcover)

The Middle Way: Finding Happiness in a World of Extremes
The Middle Way: Finding Happiness in a World of Extremes (Hardcover)
By Lou Marinoff

Review & Description

Today, our global village is filled with strife, caused primarily by extremists of every kind, all unwilling to compromise. But there is a better way—a middle way—where we might discover common ground for peace, both personally and universally. Lou Marinoff, professor of philosophy and author of Plato, not Prozac, reveals the ABCs of finding that spiritually rich path: Aristotle, Buddha, and Confucius. Each of these wise men knew that extremism destroys happiness, health and harmony, and shared the supremely important notion that the main purpose of our existence is to lead a good life, here and now. In three sections, Marinoff examines the contemporary world and shows how the “Middle Way” provides solutions to our most pressing problems. Part One looks at civilizational dynamics that drive both cooperation and conflict across borders, and introduces each of the ABCs. The second segment focuses on some notorious extremes—including political polarization, and simmering religious, tribal, gender, cultural, and economic divides—and how the ABCs can reconcile them. And the third, final section enlightens us on how we all can apply the ABCs to the betterment of our own lives and humanity as a whole. A short list of recommended readings accompanies each chapter, along with illustrations, maps, and eye-opening charts. Read more

Reasons and Persons (Oxford Paperbacks) (Paperback)
By Derek Parfit

Review & Description

Challenging, with several powerful arguments, some of our deepest beliefs about rationality, morality, and personal identity, Parfit claims that we have a false view about our own nature. It is often rational to act against our own best interests, he argues, and most of us have moral views that are self-defeating. We often act wrongly, although we know there will be no one with serious grounds for complaint, and when we consider future generations it is very hard to avoid conclusions that most of us will find very disturbing. The God Role: An Ex-Soviet Explores Science and Religion (Autobiography of Thought) (Kindle Edition)

The God Role: An Ex-Soviet Explores Science and Religion (Autobiography of Thought)
The God Role: An Ex-Soviet Explores Science and Religion (Autobiography of Thought) (Kindle Edition)
By M.P. Klinov

Review & Description

The existence (or non-existence) of God is a hot topic at the moment, thanks to such new atheist writers as Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and Christopher Hitchens. M.P Klinov is not a new atheist, but he IS a Soviet ex-patriot. Having had religion denied him during his formative years, he is understandably curious about the role God and religion.

Says Klinov: "What they did not tell us in the USSR was that throughout the world, people who had religion chose to have it. I have since discovered that, not only do these people take the right to choose belief for granted, they may not think much about what it is they have chosen to believe."

Armed with curiosity about what drew people to religion, Klinov observed that much religious dogma was not so much about God, as it was about the desire of human beings to be protected in this world and the next. He began to research the roots of morality, selfishness, lust for power, and other subjects that bear on our ability (or lack thereof) to live in harmony and lasting peace. He found he'd opened a Pandora’s box of ideas about what makes the human being dependent on the God role. In his struggle to understand why people, while declaring their love of God, continually show their intolerance of his creatures, he drew upon the fields of physics, biology and other scientific disciplines to explore how the idea of God integrated (or failed to integrate) with scientific theory.

The result is THE GOD ROLE, which the author hopes to follow with a second volume further exploring human nature. Read more

Leo Strauss and the Politics of Exile: The Making of a Political Philosopher (Tauber Institute Series for the Study of European Jewry) (Hardcover)
By Eugene R. Sheppard

Review & Description

Born in rural Hesse, Germany, Leo Strauss (1899-1973) became an active Zionist and philosopher during the tumultuous and fractious Weimar Republic. As Eugene R. Sheppard demonstrates in this groundbreaking and engaging book, Strauss gravitated towards such thinkers as Franz Rosenzweig, Martin Heidegger, and Carl Schmitt as he sought to identify and overcome fundamental philosophical, political, and theological crises. The rise of Nazism impelled Strauss as a young Jewish emigre, first in Europe and then in America, to grapple with--and accommodate his thought to--the pressing challenges of exile. In confronting his own state of exile, Strauss enlisted premodern Jewish thinkers such as Moses Maimonides and Baruch Spinoza who earlier addressed the problem of reconciling their competing loyalties as philosophers and Jews.

This is the first study to frame Strauss's political philosophy around his critique of liberalism and the problem of exile. Sheppard follows Strauss from Europe to the United States, a journey of a conservative Weimar Jew struggling with modern liberalism and the existential and political contours of exile. Strauss sought to resolve the conflicts of a Jew unwilling to surrender loyalty to his ancestral community and equally unwilling to adhere to the strictures of orthodox observance. Strauss saw truth and wisdom as transcending particular religious and national communities, as well as the modern enlightened humanism in which he himself had been nurtured. In his efforts to navigate between the Jewish and the philosophical, the ancient and the modern, Berlin and New York, Strauss developed a distinctively programmatic way of reading and writing "between the lines." Sheppard recaptures the complexity and intrigue of this project which has been ignored by those who both reject and claim Strauss's legacy. Read more

Review & Description

This fascinating book charts the relationship between Mark Rowlands, a rootless philosopher, and Brenin, his extraordinarily well-travelled wolf. More than just an exotic pet, Brenin exerted an immense influence on Rowlands as both a person, and, strangely enough, as a philosopher, leading him to re-evaluate his attitude to love, happiness, nature and death. By turns funny (what do you do when your wolf eats your air-conditioning unit?) and poignant, this life-affirming book will make you reappraise what it means to be human. Read more

Presenting a comprehensive, critical examination of the claim that private property is one of the fundamental rights of humankind, Waldron here contrasts two types of arguments about rights: those based on historical entitlement, and those based on the importance of property for freedom. He illustrates this contrast with a detailed discussion of the theories of property found in Locke's Second Treatise and Hegel's Philosophy of Rights, and offers original analyses of the concept of ownership, the idea of rights, and the relation between property and equality, finding that traditional arguments about property yield some surprisingly radical conclusions. Fragments of an Anarchist Anthropology (Paperback)

Fragments of an Anarchist Anthropology
Fragments of an Anarchist Anthropology (Paperback)
By David Graeber

Review & Description

Everywhere anarchism is on the upswing as a political philosophy—everywhere, that is, except the academy. Anarchists repeatedly appeal to anthropologists for ideas about how society might be reorganized on a more egalitarian, less alienating basis. Anthropologists, terrified of being accused of romanticism, respond with silence . . . . But what if they didn't?

This pamphlet ponders what that response would be, and explores the implications of linking anthropology to anarchism. Here, David Graeber invites readers to imagine this discipline that currently only exists in the realm of possibility: anarchist anthropology. Read more

In this sequence of philosophical essays about natural science, the author argues that fundamental explanatory laws, the deepest and most admired successes of modern physics, do not in fact describe regularities that exist in nature. Cartwright draws from many real-life examples to propound a novel distinction: that theoretical entities, and the complex and localized laws that describe them, can be interpreted realistically, but the simple unifying laws of basic theory cannot. Review & Description

Copyright © 2005 by Mani Bhaumik. Reprinted by permission.

This L. A. TIMES BESTSELLER is the odyssey of a scientist who achieved the impossible dream in America and traveled the path towards renewed spirituality, while anchoring his faith in science. Code Name God by Dr. MANI BHAUMIK chronicles the remarkable and inspirational story of the internationally recognized co-inventor of the laser technology that made LASIK eye surgery possible. More significantly, this is a book for everyone who wants to bridge the gap between science and spirituality. Code Name God is the tollbooth on the road to the journey of life and how it really works.

Dr. Bhaumik offers a sketch of his own unbelievable life to confirm that quantum leaps do happen. He lived through a Tsunami-like tidal wave, saw his village wiped out with three million people dying in its aftermath. He never owned a pair of shoes until he was sixteen and he landed in Los Angeles with a mere three dollars in his pocket. From his impoverished childhood in his native India, he went on to be featured in The Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, to the hallowed halls of science and academia in America, and to parties with presidents and celebrities. He eventually experienced an enormous emptiness of existence before returning to his spiritual roots and came to the realization that "happiness is an inside job."

Code Name God confirms that transcending all theologies and denominations, humankind has had a conviction of a creator divinity. Having brought the universe into existence, it remains present throughout, unfolding the ongoing creation. People seem to have always accepted that the Creator will never be revealed to us empirically. Dr Bhaumik finds remarkable support from science for the one source of religion. He portrays our objective knowledge of an abstract entity that permeates the entire universe. He also argues why an inseparable association of that universal entity with consciousness appears credible and why it would be logical to infer that the one source of the world's great spiritual traditions is grounded in scientific reality. Code Name God illustrates for general readers the particulars of these profound new discoveries of science. Read more

Tales told, untold. "Dutch Touch" is a journey to touch those tales - the evergreen ephmeral spirit - the zeitgeist of the Netherlands, through the lens of a Dutch lady and the eyes of a foreigner. A tiny element is however left out: Reader's imaginative participation. This omission is with a hope that a new melange of memories and moments will emerge with each Reader and touch "Dutch Touch" and make this journey sublime. Bon voyage! Read more

Review & Description

Pick Your Battle is a book that speaks to the desire for a return to nature that propels movements for sustainability, without entirely succumbing to this desire.  While remaining true to the utopian spirit he finds in various ecological trends and lifestyles, Lain dares to examine how the ideas embedded in movement for permaculture fare after being subjected to radical scrutiny.  Imagine that Slavoj Zizek or Guy Debord had written a breezy but ironic memoir about urban foraging.Pick Your Battle confronts the apocalyptic sentiments expressed by left figures such as Christopher Hedge's who, in his February 2010 essay for Adbusters entitled The Zero Point of Systemic Collapse, argued for the need to abandon reformist struggle and batten down the hatches. The book confronts the ideas expressed by figures on the right like Alex Jones and Glenn Beck.  But, while Beck worried in 2010 about what is coming out of Europe, while he fretted about the possibility that the French book The Coming Insurrection might be a harbinger of what is to come, Lain sees such a possibility as a hopeful sign. The story in Pick Your Battle revolves around Lain's foraging expeditions in Portland as he gets and then loses a job at a Comcast call center. This is a philosophy book, a memoir, and a radical self-help book for people living during an epoch when the self is under siege. Pick Your Battle is a book that quotes Karl Marx and Carlos Castandea in somewhat unequal measure, a book that hopes to convince even those of us who are stocking up on canned goods and freeze dried ice cream that a radical change to the economic and social order is more likely than total annihilation."Pick Your Battle" was successfully funded through Kickstarter.com on July 13th, 2010.   Read more
